General Overview
Originally established in 1970 as a way for adult learners to pursue higher education while still able to keep their full-time jobs, Walden University provides a wide variety of accredited online degree programs designed with flexibility in mind. Walden focuses on teaching students to use their knowledge and skills in their chosen career field to affect positive social change, and uses a “scholar-practitioner model” in which students work closely with faculty members and fellow students to create solutions to pressing community and work-based problems together.
Walden offers its distance learning programs through a number of content delivery strategies. One of the most common is the use of online courses in which students complete their work on the web. However, students can also choose to work offline where they download the online course files to a computer so that they can do the work without an Internet connection. A third option is what is called “MobileLearn” through which students can download podcast versions of course content to an MP3 player or smartphone so that students can do their work “on the go.”
A number of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees are offered through four different colleges: the Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership, the College of Management and Technology, the College of Health Sciences, and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
